  • In 2008, only 8 California public colleges (5%) were smoke/tobacco-free.

  • By Spring 2023, 109 public colleges and universities (73%) were smoke/tobacco-free.

  • CYAN has maintained a statewide tobacco policy database since 2001 and updates it at least twice yearly.

Student Tobacco Use Data

  • Cigarette smoking among college students increased from 4.1% in 2020 to 5.9% in 2021.

  • Approximately 20% of college students reported vaping nicotine within the past 30 days.

  • Young adults in California are significantly more likely to use e-cigarettes than adults over age 26.
