A systemwide policy was adopted in 2012 and fully implemented by 2014.
California State University (CSU)
All 23 CSU campuses are 100% smoke and tobacco-free, including electronic smoking devices.
The system adopted a comprehensive policy in April 2017.
California Community Colleges (CCC)
69% (80 of 115 campuses) are currently 100% smoke or tobacco-free.
65 campuses prohibit all tobacco products including e-cigarettes.
11 campuses are fully smoke-free including e-cigarettes.
In 2018, the CCC Board of Governors adopted a statewide resolution encouraging smoke/tobacco-free campuses.
Four-Year vs. Two-Year Institutions
California is home to 33 public four-year institutions (10 UC, 23 CSU) and 117 two-year community colleges. When comparing data collected from UC and CSU campuses to community colleges, some interesting findings were made.
70% of community colleges are 100% smoke or tobacco-free compared to 100% of UC and CSU campuses
91% of community colleges include e-cigarettes in their policies compared to 100% of UC and CSU campuses
