Great American Smokeout
For more than 40 years, the American Cancer Society has hosted the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November. The Great American Smokeout is an opportunity for smokers to commit to healthy, smoke -free lives – not just for a day, but year round. The Great American Smokeout provides an opportunity for individuals, community groups, businesses, health care providers, and others to encourage people to use the date to make a plan to quit, or plan in advance and initiate a smoking cessation plan on the day of the event . The Great American Smokeout event challenges people to stop smoking and helps people learn about the many tools they can use to help them quit and stay quit.
CYAN supports Great American Smokeout events on college and university campuses to increase awareness of tobacco-related issues as well as to promote tobacco treatment services. On Great American Smokeout, we ask that people quit tobacco for the day (or even better— for good!)
When is the Great American Smokeout?
The Great American Smokeout is traditionally held on the third Thursday of November; however, your campus might choose to plan the event on a different day to accommodate your campus calendar. Great American Smokeout is on November 15, 2018.
Great American Smokeout Webinar
The College Team hosted a webinar on Wednesday, October 24th at 11AM PT. This webinar featured innovative ideas for your Great American Smokeout event on campus and facilitated a discussion and sharing of event ideas between participants. We discussed the rising popularity of new and emerging products such as e-cigarettes and JUUL and how your campus can reach out to e-cigarette and JUUL users during your event. In addition, the Clinical Director from the California Smokers' Helpline will join us to discuss using Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRTs) to quit electronic smoking devices.
